Guest introduction
The 10th GM Radio will be streamed on the Twitter space of “CP_Global” from 15:00 on Thursday, March 2nd. Our guest is Stephen Richardson, Head of APAC and Head of Financial Markets at Fireblocks.
Fireblocks is a company that provides infrastructure services for crypto assets (virtual currencies) and digital assets for companies. Our mission is to enable all companies to safely and easily provide cryptocurrency and digital asset services.
The company was founded after a hack by the North Korean hacker group Lazarus. The future Fireblocks founders were involved in the investigation into the hack that stole bitcoins from four South Korean exchanges in 2017.
Fireblocks pointed out that the reasons why cybercriminals have started targeting digital assets instead of traditional financial services are “the complexity of the mechanism” and “the lack of solutions to protect assets”. So far, the company has developed multiple services to help businesses provide their services securely.
Currently, approximately 1,300 companies and organizations are using Fireblocks services. In addition to developing services, the company received “SOC 2 Type II” international certification from Ernst & Young (E&Y), one of the world’s four largest accounting firms, in December 2019. We are also working to improve safety.
Fireblocks became a unicorn company with a valuation of more than $1 billion (about 134 billion yen) within 10 years of its founding. A number of companies have invested in the company, including BNY Mellon, Paradigm, Sequoia Capital and Galaxy Digital.
In 2020, it opened offices in Singapore and Hong Kong and expanded into APAC.
About the product
The products they provide are wide ranging, including anti-money laundering (AML), compliance, wallet, and DeFi (decentralized finance) services. It supports over 1,100 tokens and supports not only cryptocurrencies but also NFTs (non-fungible tokens).
A feature of the mechanism for improving safety is that the security structure is divided into multiple layers. With this mechanism, a service that is difficult to intrude is constructed.
For example, in the first layer, we introduced a unique protocol “MPC-CMP” for multi-party computation (MPC). MPC is a technique in which multiple subjects work together to perform certain calculations while keeping their own secret data hidden from other subjects. Fireblocks is used to decompose and store one private key and use it as it is decomposed.
The company does not store private keys on a single device, but disassembles and distributes them to eliminate single points of failure. The introduction of MPC-CMP is one of the major features of the company.
In this interview, we plan to ask questions about Fireblocks’ business and future plans with the theme of “?”.
